Chapter 6

Two fixed ideas are not able to exist together in the spiritual world, just as two bodies in the physical world are not not able to occupy the same space. The three, seven and ace soon obscured the image of the dead old woman in the imagination of Germann. The three, seven and ace - they did not leave his head or move from his lips. On seeing a young woman, he would say: "How elegant she is!... Just like the three of hearts". If he was asked: "what is the time", he would reply: "five minutes to seven". Each fat bellied man reminded him of the ace. The three, seven and ace pursued him in his sleep, taking all possible forms. The three bloomed in front of him in the image of a magnificent big flower, the seven appeared as a Gothic archway, the ace as a huge spider. All his thoughts united on one thing, - to take advantage of the secret which had cost him so dearly. He started to think about retirement and travel. He wanted in the public gaming houses of Paris to extort his treasure from  enchanted fortune. Chance delivered him from his troubles.
In Moscow, a society of wealthy players was formed, under the chairmanship of the famous Chekalinsky, who had played cards all  his life and had acquired millions at one time, winning promisory notes and losing real money. His lengthy experience earned him the trust of his friends, and an open house, a good cook, amiability and merriment earned him the respect of the public. He arrived in St Petersburg. Young men rushed to him, forgetting balls for cards and preferring the temptations of faro to the seductions of chasing women. Narumov brought Germann to him.
They passed through a row of sumptuous rooms, full of polite attentive foot-men. Several generals and privy councillors were playing whist; young people were sitting, sprawled on damask covered sofas, eating ice-cream and smoking pipes. In the drawing room at a long table, around which crowded twenty players, sat the host who kept the bank. He was a man of about sixty, of the most venerable appearance; his head was covered with silvery hair; good nature was depicted in his full and fresh face; his eyes shone, animated by a constant smile. Narumov introduced Germann to him. Chekalinsky shook his hand in a friendly manner, and asked him not to stand on ceremony, and continued to keep the bank.
The deal lasted a long time. There were more than thirty cards on the table. Chekalinsky paused after each deal, so as to give the players time to give orders, to settle their losses, to deferentially listen to their demands, and still more attentively to straighten out a corner, which had been turned down absent mindedly. Finally the deal ended. Chekalinsky shuffled the cards and prepared to deal another.
- Permit me to put down a card, - Germann said, stretching out his hand from behind a fat gentleman, so as to stake against the bank. Chekalinsky smiled and bowed, silently, in a sign of humble agreement. Narumov, laughingly congratulated Germann on the breaking of his long fast and wished him beginner's luck.
- Commence! - Germann said, having written down with chalk the stake on his card.
- How much? - asked the banker frowning, - excuse me, I cannot make it out.
- Forty seven thousand, - replied Germann.
At these words all heads turned instantly, and all eyes stared at Germann. - He has gone mad! - thought Narumov.
- Permit me to remark to you, - said Chekalinsky, his smile unfailing, - that your stake is high: nobody has yet staked more than two hundred and seventy five on a single stake here.
- So? - replied Germann, - will you take my card or not?
Chekalinsky bowed with an air of humble acceptance.
- I only wanted to announce to you, - he said, - that, being in the trust of my friends, I am not able to bank other than on pure money. On my part, I am of course assured that your word is sufficient, but for the propriety of the game and accounts I must ask you to place your money on the card.
Germann took from his pocket a bank note and gave it to Chekalinsky, who cursorily glanced at it, and placed it on Germann's card.
He started to deal. On the right lay a nine, on the left a three.
- It has won! - Germann said, showing his card.
Among the players rose a murmur. Chekalinsky frowned, but a smile immediately returned to his face.
- Do you wish to receive payment? - he asked of Germann.
- Please be so kind.
Chekalinsky took from his pocket several bank notes and immediately settled the account. Germann took his money and got up from the table. Narumov was not able to come to his senses. Germann drank a glass of lemonade and set out for home.
On another day in the evening he again appeared at Chekalinsky's. The host kept the bank. Germann went up to the table; the punters immediately gave him a place. Chekalinsky affectionately bowed to him.
Germann waited for a new deal, placed a card, and put down on it forty seven thousand and yesterday's winnings.
Chekalinsky started to deal. The Jack fell on the right, the seven on the left.
Germann revealed a seven.
Everybody exclaimed. Chekalinsky was visibly dazed. He counted out ninety four thousand and gave it to Germann. Germann took it with composure and at that moment retired.
The following evening Germann again appeared at the table. Everybody was waiting for him. The generals and privvy councillors stopped their whist, so as to see the remarkable game. Young officers lept out of the sofas; all the foot-men gathered in the drawing room. Everybody crowded around Germann. Other players did not lay down their cards, with eagerness awaiting how it would end. Germann stood at the table, preparing himself to punt alone against the pale, but ever smiling Chekalinsky. Each unsealed a pack of cards. Chekalinsky shuffled. Germann took his card and laid it down, covering it with a pile of bank notes. It was similar to a duel. Deep silence reigned around.
Chekalinsky started to deal, his hands trembled. On the right lay a queen, on the left an ace.
- The ace has won! - said Germann and revealed his card.
- Your queen is beaten, - said Chekalinsky affably.
Germann shuddered: indeed, instead of the ace lay the queen of spades. He could not believe his eyes, not understanding, how he had been able to pull out the wrong card.
At that moment it appeared to him, that the queen of spades winked and laughed. The extraordinary resemblance struck him...
- The old woman! - he cried in terror.
Chekalinsky pulled the losing notes towards himself. Germann stood motionless. When he had left the table, there rose a  loud commotion. - Excellently punted! - the players said. - Chekalinsky shuffled the cards anew: the play continued in its normal way.
